Civil Service Commission

The Civil Service Commission is a Three (3) member board, appointed by borough council, with each member serving a 6 year term.

The Commission meets in a public session and is responsible for:

  • Creating and monitoring rules and policies for the City's civil service
  • Testing and certifying individuals in classified service
  • Managing and maintaining civil service records

Current Open Positions:

Police Officer - Nazareth Borough Police Department, Northampton County, Pennsylvania

The Borough of Nazareth is accepting applications for the position of Full Time Police Officer. This is a Civil Service position. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, be at least 21 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. As part of the Civil Service process, candidates are required to pass written, oral and polygraph examinations. Candidates must be physically capable of performing the essential functions and tasks of a police officer. Candidates will be subject to a comprehensive background investigation.

Prior to appointment, every applicant must possess a valid PA Driver's License, have successfully completed Act 120 Academy and be capable of MPOETC certification. Application packets can be obtained at the Nazareth Municipal Offices, 134 S. Main Street, Nazareth, PA 18064, Monday thru Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm or downloaded from the Borough website - nazarethboroughpa.gov - access the Forms and Documents tab on the Home Page - lower left column.

The Application deadline is Friday, August 26, 2022 at 4:00 pm. There is a non-refundable $35.00 application fee, payable in cash or money order.

Completed applications must be hand-delivered or mailed to the Nazareth Borough Municipal Offices and include payment of the $35.00 application fee. The Borough of Nazareth will not accept application packets hand-delivered or post marked after the application deadline or which do not include payment of the application fee. You cannot apply online and online applications will not be accepted.

The written examination will be administered by the Borough of Nazareth Civil Service Commission at Borough Council Chambers, 159 W. Center Street, Nazareth, PA 18064 on Saturday, September 10, 2022 beginning at 9:00 am.

Physical fitness testing standards will be posted on the Borough website - nazarethboroughpa.com. Applicants are advised to regularly check this website for additional information and other requirements. Please refer to all of the requirements for this position. They are listed below.

Basic Requirements:
US Citizen, over 21 years of age, successful completion of an Act 120 academy, Pennsylvania driver's license.

At a minimum, successful candidates are required to pass written, oral and polygraph examinations, a comprehensive background check and must be physically capable of performing the essential functions and tasks of a police officer

Police Officer Written Test:
Nazareth Borough uses The National Police Officer Selection Test (POST) tests entry level police officers on four components: arithmetic, reading comprehension, grammar and report writing. The tests have been developed by Stanard & Associates specifically for law enforcement agencies to assess incident report writing skills and predict training and job success.

The test takes 75 minutes to complete and is proctored by members of the civil service commission and includes volunteer monitors.

Applicant/candidates must score a minimal passing score of 70 on written test.

Oral Interview:
Oral Interview will consist of a group of 3 experienced law Enforcement professionals asking prearranged and standardized questions relating to police performance and decision making. Oral Interviews are scheduled one (1) hour apart giving the examiners enough time to thoroughly evaluate a candidate.
